In Europe everyone knows of Cannes but the oldest film festival in the world is actually the Venice Film Festival. It started in 1932 and is held on the island of Lido in late August. If you're traveling from Arlington homes to Edinburgh in August than you might attend the longest continuously running festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival. Others of note include the Raindance Film Festival, which is responsible for the creation of the British Independent Film Awards and is held in London. The Giffoni Film Festival in Italy is one of the largest events featuring children's films in the world.
The largest film festival in Africa is the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou and showcases mostly works from African directors.
