Most people, when they think of jobs in the film industry, think only of being an actor, director, or writer, and assume that they would never be able to work in the industry because they don't have the talent or drive necessary to get noticed in those fields. But if you speak to the attendees of the Kuala Lumpur Film Festival, you will find that there are many, many different jobs in film, and some of them don't require any artistic talent at all. If you've just received your discharge from CFB Kingston, here are some film industry jobs you might consider looking into.

Management

Have you ever stopped to think about how much work goes into making a movie? There are huge numbers of people, vast stores of equipment, and many different locations. There has to be someone to organize when filming will be done on the Toronto beach and who is being paid to rake the sand. These people are producers and production assistants. They handle the behind the scenes work that keeps the cogs of the film shoot in motion. People who do this type of work do tasks like payroll, scheduling, planning, and communicating.

Production

The director calls the shots and the actors star in them, but who make sure it is all captured on film and it looks great? The film crew does. The crew might contain an architect in Canada to design and build sets, a dresser to decorate them, people to arrange the lighting, record the sound, cut the filmed scenes together into a movie, do hair and make up for the actors, arrange the special effects, and more.

Support

A lot of people are required to make a movie, so who looks after them while they're working? The support staff. The film's crew needs to be fed, watered, entertained, given somewhere to stay, shower, and use the toilet, and driven from place to place as their job requires. The support end of a film's staff has excellent opportunities for former drivers of municipal vehicles, hotel and restaurant management graduates, caterers, honey wagon operators, and more.

Promotion

Once the film is made, the studio needs to make back the money that it spent by selling tickets for people to see it. But how will they get people to buy tickets if they don't know the film exists? Enter the marketing experts and publicists. Their job is to get the message across to viewers Toronto lofts and encourage them to buy tickets. Making trailers, distributing the film, designing posters, designing and running advertising campaigns, buying time on TV and space in magazines, and arranging interviews with the cast are all tasks people who do this type of work might be called upon to handle.
